The Societies are in full swing
The Societies at the City Law School have been busily putting on events for their members and planning future ones. Here’s a bit of a snapshot of the story so far…
If you haven’t joined a Society yet, please do. It’s a great way to meet people, network and broaden your horizons.
Pro Bono Society: “Power of Pro Bono” Panel Event
The City Pro Bono Society (PBS) has a big agenda for this academic year, and the ‘Power of Pro Bono’ Panel Event was first on the list. The event took place on October 16th at The City Law School, consisting of panellists from several law firms and Pro Bono clinics/charities:
- Amicus ALJ
- Leducate
- Islington Legal Advice Centre
- CMS
- Arnold & Porter
- Clyde & Co
The event was open to all law students, and the Pro Bono Society saw an amazing turnout for attendance.
The panel discussion was led by Communications Officer and LLB3 student Isobel Lawler, who asked the panellists questions pertaining to the organisation/firm, their work, impact, perspectives on access to justice, as well as how students can become involved in Pro Bono work. The discussion was followed by the opportunity to network with the panellists, which the students took advantage of to ask any questions they had.
The Pro Bono Society would like to extend a great thank you to the panellists who took the time to attend and participate in the panel discussion. They also thank all the students for attending, and hope they enjoyed the event and found the knowledge they received to be insightful. The society has more upcoming events planned in the near future, so keep an eye out for any posts!
Women in Law Society: Meet & Greet, Lincoln’s Inn ‘Innsight’ Day and Moot Mentorship
Women in Law kicked off the year with an impressive lineup of events, positioning itself as the most active law society so far! The year promises to be filled with exciting opportunities for members.
Meet and Greet
On October 4th, we hosted our Meet and Greet, featuring a variety of snacks and drinks to welcome members and introduce them to the committee. The event had a fantastic turnout of 45 people, contributing to our growing membership, which now stands at 130. Attendees enjoyed games like Mafia and Cup Pong, with prizes for the winners, all organized by our amazing Events Officer, Pauline.
Lincoln’s Inn Innsight Day
Our first academic event of the year took place on October 9th, when we brought 38 members to Lincoln’s Inn. The day offered an in-depth look into the world of barristers, covering topics like the role of the Inns, scholarships, and career opportunities. A panel of barristers at the Inn also provided valuable insights.
Moot Mentorship
Our flagship event, Moot Mentorship, returned with more excitement than ever! On October 5th and 19th, 20-30 members joined us for a mooting workshop and competition. The workshop provided a comprehensive guide to moot procedures, led by barrister Elizabeth Wark from 3DJB and City University’s Helin Usal, an experienced BVS student.
Members then showcased their skills at the Moot Mentorship Competition on October 19th, where they argued a point of criminal law in front of four distinguished judges. The panel included Sarah Steinhardt and Abigail Bright from Doughty Street Chambers, Elizabeth Wark from 3DJB, and Monica Greenwood, a student of both the UK and New York Bar.
The 93% Club: Meet & Greet
We recently held our first meet and greet and it was a huge success. We played games such as water pong, charades and mafia to break the ice and get people to know each other. The games were competitive and people couldn’t stop laughing. The members created connections and shared social media to stay in contact with each other. Once the pizza was ordered everyone settled into comfortable conversations and mingled. When a committee member noticed a similar degree or year they would introduce them to each other.
As it was a rather inactive society last year we were nervous about turnout. But we almost doubled the turnout this year. This was due to a committee that is super eager to make the most of this society and due to our incredible marketing on our Instagram on @93clubcity.
We were also a part of the tips and treats law school event. This was a huge success and we managed to promote our society and gained new memberships too. It was reassuring for the first years to find a connection with people who also had no idea where to start with the legal world. As the majority of our committee are law students, this was an incredible event to jump start the year.
A time line of our meet and greet:
- People arrived and we handed out sweets and stickers
- People mingled and listened to music
- We moved onto charades which broke the ice between the group
- After charades we moved to a highly competitive game of water pong
- Then we moved the game that took up the majority of the evening MAFIA
- This built connections, broke down friendships and was overall an incredibly fun time
- Then it came to the end of the event, everyone shared there social media said goodbye and thank you and the committee tidied up
