Andrew Lockley Public Law Essay Competition -now open for entries

Launched by the Public Law and Human Rights team at law firm Irwin Mitchell in 2021, the Andrew Lockley Public Law Essay Competition aims to give aspiring public law and human rights lawyers a platform to kick-start their careers. The contest is named after the first head of their Public Law team, who led the team’s work for over 10 years.
So if you’re an aspiring Public Law and Human Rights (PLHR) solicitor (whether law student, graduate, trainee solicitor or paralegal) then this essay competition is for you! There’s a chance to win a £250 Blackwell’s gift card and of course the fame that follows…
This year’s essay question is:
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is currently passing through the legislative process. The Bill is considered to be a landmark piece of legislation due to the long campaign leading to its introduction as a private members’ bill.
To what extent do you think the Bill balances the competing requirements of an individual’s right to autonomy and the need for safeguards.
Entrants are asked not to use AI.
OK I’m up for that, what else do I need to know?
Your essay should be no more than 1,500 words with a bibliography (not included in the word count) and answers should be sent to oliver.carter@irwinmitchell.com.
Be sure to read the terms and conditions and official rules before entering into the contest. Deadline is 27th October 2025.
