Are you an LLB student looking for a new writing challenge (with an internship as the prize)?
Baroness Carr, Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, has launched the International Law Book Facility’s (ILBF) 2025 essay competition – open to all undergraduates studying law in the UK. You can watch her introducing the competition via YouTube.

It is the ILBF’s 20th anniversary, and the subject matter of the essay is a key issue of huge importance to the ILBF’s mission – the rule of law. The essay title is:
‘What will be the challenges to the rule of law in the next 20 years?’
The deadline for submissions is 22nd April at 4pm. The finalists will be invited to the ILBF’s 20th anniversary event in London in May when the winner will be announced.
What about this internship then?
The winner will undertake a week-long internship with Brown Rudnick this summer and their essay will be published in the Commonwealth Lawyers Association newsletter which has an international circulation. It will also be published on the ILBF website.
OK I’m in, how do I find out more?
All details (judges, rules, submission info) can be found on the competition website.
In support of the essay competition, on 25th February from 5pm-6.30pm the competition organisers will be holding a free online panel discussion hosted by LexisNexis with an exciting panel who will delve into the issues facing the rule of law. Register online for your place.
