Reporting back from the InterLaw Diversity Forum Student Lab Summit

The 2024 InterLaw Diversity Forum (IDF) Student Lab Summit was a resounding success, bringing together aspiring legal professionals, industry leaders, and recruiters in an inspiring and interactive virtual setting. The event served as a testament to the evolving ways in which the legal sector fosters inclusion and innovation while ensuring accessibility for diverse talent.

A Virtual Experience Beyond Expectations

Initially, I was unsure about attending an online law fair, but the InterLaw Diversity Forum team designed an interactive platform that exceeded my expectations. The smaller group settings allowed for meaningful interactions with representatives from top law firms, giving attendees the chance to ask in-depth questions and truly connect. This format provided a more personal and impactful experience than I had anticipated.

Key Highlights and Takeaways

Standing Out in Legal Recruitment

Led by Justine Thompson, Executive Director of the InterLaw Diversity Forum, this workshop provided invaluable insights into making standout applications. Among the many takeaways:

  • Start with the basics: High-quality applications take time, and rejection is part of the process.
  • Authenticity is key: Applications should reflect your personal journey, interests, and alignment with a firm’s values.
  • Resilience pays off: Many successful lawyers faced initial setbacks, but persistence and preparation make the difference.

What recruiters seek

Firms are looking for candidates with intellectual ability, strong written skills, and critical thinking. A genuine passion for law and enthusiasm for the specific firm are essential, as well as the ability to articulate why a particular firm aligns with your career aspirations.

Law firm research

Practical advice included exploring resources like Chambers Student Guide, legal news platforms, and firm websites. The emphasis was on creating a clear career plan, researching firms’ practice areas, and tailoring applications to align with individual goals and firm values.

Insights from the Future of Law Panel

Moderated by InterLaw Co-Chairs Daniel Winterfeldt and Patti Kachidza, this panel featured thought leaders like Claire Keast-Butler of Cooley LLP, Mary Bonsor of Flex Legal, and others. Discussions ranged from the impact of AI on legal practice to sustainability and diversity trends. Claire highlighted the emerging role of AI, emphasising the need for skilled lawyers to oversee its implementation while ensuring accuracy and ethical use.

Law Fair and Networking

Representatives from firms like Latham & Watkins, Cooley, Arnold & Porter, and Morrison Foerster shared details about their work culture, practice areas, and pro bono initiatives. The collaborative and approachable atmosphere encouraged participants to ask questions and build connections that could shape their legal careers.

Inspiration from the Keynote Speaker

The event concluded with an inspiring keynote by Daniel Burnand of BCLP, who shared his journey to becoming a partner and his insights on the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). He left attendees with actionable advice on networking and developing a mindset geared toward long-term success.
