As law students, we often spend our days reading cases, learning legislation, and preparing for exams. But how often do we get the chance to explore how businesses actually operate and how the commercial world shapes the legal profession? This is where the British & Irish University Commercial Awareness Competition (BIUCAC) comes in…
BIUCAC 2026 is a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate law students and 2025/2026 law graduates from non Russell Group and Irish universities to develop their commercial awareness, challenge themselves, and connect with leading law firms. With 22 sponsors, 22 prizes, and five exciting rounds, the competition offers much more than a chance to win. It is an opportunity to learn, build confidence, and gain valuable insight into life beyond university.
Why BIUCAC?
BIUCAC was created with a clear purpose: to level the playing field, promote social mobility, and showcase the talent of students from non Russell Group and Irish universities to leading law firms. It also aims to give successful participants the chance to experience the legal sector first hand.
Whether you are already passionate about commercial law or simply curious about how businesses and lawyers work together, BIUCAC provides an excellent platform to explore these interests. You do not need to know everything about business to get started. What matters is your willingness to learn, think critically, and take on a new challenge.
What Does the Competition Involve?

BIUCAC 2026 consists of five rounds, each designed to test different skills and aspects of commercial awareness.
Round 1 and 2
The competition begins with Round 1 on 26 October at 19:00, followed by Round 2 on 27 October at 19:00. Both rounds feature 30 multiple choice questions, with time limits of 14 and 12 minutes respectively. The top 50% of contestants progress to the next stage.
Round 3
Round 3 takes place on 28 October at 19:00 and includes another 30 multiple choice questions, to be completed in 10 minutes. The top 60 to 70 contestants advance.
Round 4
On 9 November at 19:00, Round 4 introduces a more practical challenge through Google Forms and Zoom. Participants complete 20 multiple choice questions, followed by a one to one virtual presentation to partners for successful candidates. The top 24 contestants move forward to the final round.
Round 5 – Finals
The competition concludes on 25 November at 10:00 AM, in person at Travers Smith LLP. The semi finals feature a client pitch, negotiation exercise, and presentation to partners. The grand finals involve presenting a commercial case to three judges, giving finalists the chance to demonstrate their communication, analytical, and problem solving skills in a professional environment.
Big opportunites, Exciting Prizes:
One of the most exciting aspects of BIUCAC is the range of opportunities available to its winners. Prizes include places on summer vacation schemes, insight schemes, and open days, as well as networking lunches with trainees and graduate recruitment teams.

Participants can also benefit from conversations with lawyers from their preferred practice areas, personalised CV reviews, mock interviews, assessment centre preparation, and application advice. Some prizes include a £100 Amazon voucher, while one offers a place on a 2027 summer vacation scheme at a participating firm’s Birmingham, London, or Manchester office.
These experiences can help students build professional connections, understand the recruitment process, and feel more prepared for future legal applications.
The Role of a BIUCAC Ambassador:
BIUCAC Brand Ambassadors play an important role in connecting the competition with university students and spreading awareness about the opportunities it offers. Their role involves promoting BIUCAC within their university, encouraging eligible students to participate, and sharing important updates, registration details, and competition information with their peers. By acting as a link between BIUCAC and their university community, ambassadors help ensure that more students discover and benefit from this valuable opportunity. It is also a chance to represent a competition that promotes equal access, professional development, and greater exposure to the legal industry.
Ready to Take the Challenge?

BIUCAC offers preparation resources through its website, including the BIUCAC Insight Series, business courses, financial press recommendations, podcasts, and practice quizzes designed to reflect the first two rounds.
