For Sona Mehta’s most recent round of interviews with practitioners (My journey out of law), she speaks to those who have used their law outside of the standard options offered by the legal profession. There are some pathways here you might not have thought about!
Adventures in tax…
First we get to meet Sage Lakhani, a graduate of the City Law School LLB (1997). On graduating, she went straight into the world of tax and is now COO at Kene Partners Limited where she’s responsible for helping companies access R&D tax credits, grants and other tax incentives which form a key part of the government’s Industrial Strategy.
Media games…
Next up is Mark Hughes, an LPC graduate from The City Law School (2014). He worked in libel and defamation law until 2020 when he decided to pursue a career in media. Mark now works as a questions writer and assistant producer on major TV game shows for the BBC and ITV.
Prioritising people…
Shamin Manji qualified as a lawyer in a regional firm in 2000, but never considered the practice of law for her. On qualifying, she took some time out and then embarked in a career in HR and now works in HR for a University.
Locking it down…data protection and information security…
Alexandra has LLM degrees in two jurisdictions (Russia 2018 and Germany 2020), and wanted to travel and explore the world in many more domains. She is now Senior Project Manager – Data Protection, Privacy, Information Security at Activision Blizzard.
Privacy queen…
“Be creative, do your research – look and you will find”
Lorraine’s career in privacy began shortly after completing her bar exams when her employer tasked her with helping to develop their privacy program in anticipation of GDPR implementation. This experience ignited her passion for privacy, steering her career in a new direction. She then joined the John Lewis Partnership Privacy team, where she gained extensive experience advising the retail industry and enhancing their privacy program. Currently, Lorraine serves as Group Privacy Manager at Vodafone, where she advises consumer product owners and privacy teams across various markets, and is instrumental in developing processes, guidance, and policies.
